n How can my cheerleaders get Varsity letters? Varsity letterman status is a very prestigious award for your cheerleaders. Many, many Ohio High Schools do award letters. We have sampled schools from around the state to obtain their requirements. The Spring 2008 Newsletter shares the basic core requriements you should set with your athletic director to award this achievement. The newsletter also gives you some creative cheer specific guidelines and regulations, whether your "letterman" compete or not.
n A cheerleader sent an awful email to people all over, coaches, cheerleaders, judges, can we sue him? From a coaches perspective, you should reinforce your policies and philosohies and character education values to try to prohibit your teammates from holding grudges or being jealous of their own teammates and their friendly competitiors. n Why won't the OACC advocate for cheerleading to become a sport? The first general meeting hosted cheer coaches from all levels, athletic directors, assistant coaches, parents, cheerleaders, trainers, etc. The discussion was debated and voted upon in the best interest of all cheerleading coaches and participants. n How can I become more involved with the OACC, voice my opinions and really make a difference to support our cheer coaches and cheerleaders? Joining one of the committees is a great start. It gives you an opportunity to share your ideas and experieinces and draw from others. The diversity of cheerleading helps to stay progressive, creative, solid, and stable. n The football team has already taken all the fundraising dates for next year, how are we expected to make any money? The OACC has researched some creative ways to make money that don't conflict with schedules. You can raise money for your teams anytime. Money for us
n March Madness truly was. I need to get drinking (alcohol) under control. You aren't the first coach of any sport at a collegiate level to deal with alcohol issues. The OACC has published recommendations and policies for your college to adapt and enforce. Rule
n We had more cheerleaders sign up for youth football than we have coaches, can you provide me coaches? Yes. We keep a list of coaches and students who volunteer to coach youth leagues for the love of it. Your best bet is to obtain parent volunteers. The OACC has published booklets to teach you how to attract, retain and guide volunteers. Reference Materials
n Are the summer camp schedules ready yet? Some are. COA, Americheer, UCE and UCA schedules are well underway for Ohio teams. Instruction for your cheerleaders is available at any time from these camp directors. If you do not see a date or are looking for more information, contact us or the camp company you are looking at.
