OACC HomeComing Ideas

Homecoming

SPIRIT WEEK,  PARADE,  PEP RALLY, SOCIALS, GAME DAY,  DANCE

Homecoming is a celebration focused on honoring the past, embracing the present, and preparing for the future. Homecoming is a time for alumni to rediscover their Alma Mater, for students to realize the importance of our alumni, and for the community to get more involved with the school, new move-ins to get acquainted with the school that has shaped their city. This week-long celebration includes students, the community, family, the staff and alumni events.

Students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends are treated to a pride-filled series of events during Homecoming celebrations.

The public should be invited to attend the wide variety of athletic and entertainment events scheduled as well as to enjoy some of the traditional Homecoming activities.

Make your spirit week truly a teamwork event by working with your Student Council, Leaders Clubs, Music Directors, Chamber of Commerce, Philanthropic Organizations and PeeWee Rec Leagues.

Ideas:

SPIRIT SIGNS   Throughout your campus hallways and buildings.  Make it a class-vs-class contest!

MURAL PAINTING    For the corridors and athletic field fencing.

ART EXHIBITS        Show off the Art department's best works.  Exhibit the displays in a cafeteria, promote it as an art exhibit during the campus tour.

WINDOW PAINTING    Take advantage of a chance to participate in "legalized" graffiti and decorate a local store window your way! Not only does this event show Homecoming spirit, but it also decorates the community and helps the whole town celebrate. This Homecoming tradition takes place every year thanks to the many local businesses that donate their view!    HINT:  Only Tempera or water-based paint.  Paint on the outside of windows only.  You may be responsible for clean-up.

HOUSE DECORATING     Parents, Staff, Booster Clubs - get the community involved.

YARD DECORATING      Use old real estate sings,  dowl rods & corrugated work great.  Use shapes: pennant/flag, football, mascot outline, megaphones....  Ask your local printer to make them and sell them as fundraisers.   What a way to greet your rivals as they drive into your town!

FLOATS    The best class bonding you'll have. If you think you aren't creative, you can always clean up, serve food, help lift & hold during construction.    Do follow the theme for the year or your mascot and colors.  If you don't have handrails on your float, you may not be able to stand on it!  The floats should be on display at your bonfire, game and week-end activities.

PEP RALLY    Create three-minute acts to show your Homecoming spirit! Do anything from a lip synch, dance, stand-up comedy, or skit -- you name it!  The cheerleaders get to show off their skill, creativity and pride here!  Get your majorettes, dance teams, hip-hopppers, flag, pom and drill teams to get involved.

HOMECOMING SPIRIT CONCERT    The Homecoming Spirit Concert can be played on local cable channels or radio stations and broadcast throughout all of spirit week and thru the weekend.

PARADE    Invite your community businesses to build floats, Philanthropic Groups should be shown off here too - Lions, Eagles, Kiwanis, etc.  Show off the alumni floats.  The more bands the better - High School, pep bands, Jr high bands, Alumni Band.  Make sure you have practiced the cheers that you can perform while marching or riding.

Decorate Cars, Have youth decorate a Bicycle , rollerblade, unicycles, PreSchool Wagon pull.  Ask your youth rec leagues and peewee teams to participate.   Winners can be announced during halftime of the Homecoming game.

BONFIRE    This is the perfect setting for the Football Coach or Captain's rally Speech.  More Bonfire ideas:  serve hot chocolate and hot dogs.  People will stay and the money is a fundraiser.  Sell Football Mums with googly eyes to wear at tomorow's game.   Booster Club/parent Club activiities, booths set up. Sell/Hand Out face tatoos, mini pompons, mini megs, spirit beads, game day buttons.   Announce the Distinguished Alumni Awards for the year.  Sing the Alma mater and your fight song together.

TAILGATE PARTY    Food, fun, song, games, spirit, cheers!!  Ask the Alumni Association to put up a tent.

HALF TIME   Homecoming King & Queen Contest - Be Royalty for a Day …The Homecoming Court, comprised of (x number of) men and (x number) women, will participate in the Homecoming Parade, Pep Rally and halftime show of the Homecoming game.   Students selected as semi-finalists will be notified by phone, and the King and Queen will be announced at the Pep Rally and crowned during halftime of the Homecoming football game.

Also:  Alumni Marching Band joins in with Alma Mater   Hall of Fame Inductees Selected/Awarded
