Cheerleading as a Sport

Discussion. Login Required.

Position.

Although the discussion of the general membership is not available to the general public, the following topics were discussed:

 Pros  Cons
More respect to cheer coaches from athletic department  No increase in pay
More respect to cheer coaches from fellow scholastic coaches  " No contact" policy for coach interaction with athletes
Maybe get gym space instead of using cafeteria for practices  OHSAA sets the number of competitions you can attend
Booster clubs may have to share budgets  Limit to the dates that we can compete
Access to the Athletic Trainer  More mandatory meetings
Student peers will see that cheerleaders are athletes  Regulate our Try-Out dates
Possible more ease of use obtaining buses and transportation to events  May prohibit HS teams from hosting youth camps as fundraisers
Prove that a sport does not have to include the use of a ball  Regulate the number of cheerleaders on a team, beyond the current tournament regulations we currently follow
We don't have to compete to be considered a sport or athletes  Strict uniform restrictions
Show that we have as much dedication to our sport and rules  Uniforms may not have reflective buttons or adornments
Show the number of skills and sport integrations that cheerleading involves  Would Limit our decision making
Will get catastrophic insurance coverage through athletic department instead of activities department  Athlete may not participate in all star & scholatic - student must make choice
If bowling is going to be considered a sport, why cant we? Are they athletes?  Rules for Junior High/ MS are even tighter
More support for our OHSAA conference   Limitation on practice season
We want the recogition that other athletes get  May limit to 1 team per season sideline or competition, not both
Restrictions on the type of surface we may cheer on
Restrict us from mounting and stunting at all
Prohibit participation in parades that are off-season

This list was derived from discussion of schools that are Ohio High School Athletic Association members.  This does not necessarily affect the schools that are not OHSAA members.  Although the discussion was to advocate or not to advocate for cheerleading to become a recognized sport in the ameteur world of athletics - this does not include any discussion regarding cheerleading as an Olympic Sport or the advocacy thereof.

If you have a topic for or against, please email the office.
