OHIO ASSICIATION OF CHEERLEADING COACHES
April 10, 2006
INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALE
The Ohio Association of Cheerleading Coaches (OACC), Inc. has determined that recreation leagues, philanthropic teams, city leagues, and church leagues should not hold try-outs for participation. We feel the positive development skills that cheerleading provides outweighs the need for try-outs.
If Pre-season try-outs are held, every child wanting to cheer should "make" the team. However, we feel that "Mock Try-Outs" need to be conducted at an advanced or varsity level. This prepares the cheerleader for the scholastic experience and organized sports.
The basic core of a recreation league is to promote learning. The children should learn emotionally, physically, and socially. The child should have fun while building skills that will be beneficial their entire life:
- Making Friends
- Accepting Diversity
- Conflict resolution
- Basics of Sportsmanship
- What it means to support a team
- Memory skills
- Balance and Coordination
- The Importance of warm up and stretching
- Good basic technique in cheer motions and jumps
- Introduction to dance movement
- Introduction to the Sport of Cheerleading
- Persona and Attitude
- Overcome fears of public speaking
- Preparation for Performance Opportunities
- To be exposed to Role Models and Mentors
- Participate and have pride in their community and reinforce patriotism
- Help to choose the right sport for them
Special consideration is given for our CYOs and the teams that were formulated and founded with a major premise being competition.
