Way to Go Zippy!! WINNER OF THE 2007 CAPITAL ONE MASCOT CHALLENGE!!

Trivia: Zippy is one of the only mascots, collegiate or pro, that is a female.

This Fall, the University of Akron's Zippy (the Kangaroo) was voted all the way to the Semi-Finals in the CapitalOne Mascot Challenge. On New Year's Day the Winner of the 2007 Mascot Challenge was announced at the Michigan vs Gators Game.

The competition, which begins each September and continues through December, crowns the "Big Mascot on Campus" during the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1. The winner is chosen based on fan voting and the best mascot performance, decided by a panel of professional judges.

The Capital One All-American Mascot team began as a tradition in 2002. At last our unsung heroes of the college gridiron have their own national stage.

"Branding" Yourself

Your mascot is the face of your school and of your entire community.

The OACC provides information on getting your mascot up to snuff. Putting on a costume and attending events just will not do! Your mascot should put on personality and character when he(she) puts on the costume.

Hold mascot tryouts in conjunction with your cheer tryouts. We have found that some schools select their mascots as school begins in August and the student body begins assembling around the school and community. This seems to work really well for them.

The mascots get trained in cheers, chants, dance and dramatization! They use flags, flip cards, poms and spirit sticks and other props when they don't know a cheer or the costume is too cumbersome to perform the maneuvers.

WHO DEY !!!

Position: No. 1 Height: 6-5 Weight: 227 College: Bengal University Experience: Several decades

Who Dey hopes to be among the elite group of NFL mascots very soon ... works hard every day to make people happy ... shines during every performance he gives ... voted No. 1 mascot by his coaches and teammates.

He Entertains Bengals fans at all home football games ... makes community appearances during the offseason ... was one of the very first mascots in the NFL ... leads the league in Pro Bowl appearances, ... has been to two Super Bowls,

WHO DEY gallavants across the United States to various mascot competitions and events during his offseason ... does private appearances at parties and events all over the Cincinnati area.

Attended Bengal University where he double majored in entertainment and fun and graduated summa cum laude ... received many awards for his spirit and was named honorary dean at Bengal University after he graduated.

Personal: Who Dey resides in the jungle of Paul Brown Stadium. When he’s not entertaining fellow Bengals fans at the games, visiting the people of Cincinnati, or visiting his friends at National City, he loves to hang out with his teammates and Coach Lewis.

Who Dey also likes to read, listen to music, and ride his scooter for exercise. He says his favorite book is "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak and he is always jamming to his favorite song "Welcome to the Jungle."

Who Dey’s favorite foods are fried raven, dried dawg on toast, and salted steelers.

There is relief for you in your costume. Many costume companies make or sell "cooler packs". You can find a wrap for your neck, your waist or a full cooler body vest. Ask your Athletic Department to buy a Cooler Pack for you!

Mascots in Youth/PeeWee

Youth PeeWee Mascots

Introducing the youngest fans/participants as "Mascots" for Youth and Peewee teams is great training in self-discipline, endurance and introductory skills.

The OACC General membership voted Unanimously against try-outs for Youth Mascots.

We have found Youth/PeeWee Mascots to fall under different jurisdictions:

1) Mascots under the direction of a Mascot Coordinator. Teaches and coordinates all mascots for the league.

2) Mascot under direction of Parent Volunteer as part of that cheer squad.

3) Under the direction of High School Coach.

Your mascot's persona should be that of a mascot, not a miniature cheerleader.

Dress your mascot in your team's nostalgic uniforms or in stereotypical 1950's cheer garb. Make your mascot "special" and different.

Tips: Do not allow your mascot to roam the stands to promote spirit.

Little people overheat faster than older kids. Hydrate them.
